Rakesh's idea of a personalized learning device revolves around a pair of wearable
glasses. Unlike laptops or handhelds, these are totally hands free!!! The device
streams various learning content through wireless ports attached to it. The glasses
give the student a view of a 30-inch screen viewed from a distance of 6 to 7 feet.
Rakesh conceives of "Learning Huts" at various points on campus or in the city where
a student can walk in with these glasses and stream lessons and information that
he/she wishes to view. The glasses are charged by a thin solar panel or film that
the student can wear on his/her person during the daytime. The device thus intends
to give a convenient experience of personalized learning.
Eight other participants were given consolation prizes for their work for excellence
in technical idea or teaching methodology.
The contest announced at IIT Madras - Shaastra 2008, the annual student organized
technology festival of IIT-Madras saw more than 400 participants from all over India
competing with each other in envisioning and designing educational technologies for
the future.
"Personalized Learning, considered as one of the Grand Challenges of Engineering for
the twenty first century, is a hot new technology area which will
revolutionize the way in which education is delivered to people everywhere. It is

Contest details

Participants of the EDGEucation Next contest had to create a poster bringing out
their imagination, concept, and design for a futuristic version of personalized
education. The theme was one of the following - Books of the Future, Classrooms of
the Future or Handheld Learning Devices for the College Student. All the
participants were given a problem statement and poster design kit to submit their
entries.

Shaastra 2008 saw participation of over 15000 students from across the country. The
students participated in many Engineering and Scientific workshops, contests, events
and lectures during the five day festival at the IIT-Madras campus in Chennai.
